This is a site where Walter Hawthorne posts information about digital history and digital humanities projects and courses. At Michigan State University, Hawthorne is a professor of African, Atlantic, and Digital History; director of Matrix: Center for Digital Humanities and Social Science; director of Enslaved.org; and an editor of the Journal of Slavery and Data Preservation. His research focuses on the history of Atlantic slavery and the Atlantic trade in enslaved people of African descent. He has also written on African agricultural practices, foodways, religious beliefs, and family structures in the Old and New Worlds.
